Are you loving my Golden Earthworm Organic CSA farm share posts on insta but don’t have the time or don’t want to make the commitment for your own farm share? That’s ok!  Why not visit one of the many wonderful farmers markets on Long Island?!

Red Boston Bibb lettuce from Golden Earthworm Organic Farm

You’ll find that many farmers markets also offer cheese, bread and pastries, charcuterie, and varieties of condiments like local honeys, jams, syrups, olive oil and vinegars. Some even offer locally caught fish. Check out your community’s farmers market and please support local farmers and artisans.

Here are some tips I’ve learned along the way to make shopping at a farmers market easy peasy lemon squeezy:

  • Bring a cooler with ice packs and/or individual reusable bags. By storing your farmers market finds properly, you can keep them fresher for a bit longer.

  • Managing expectations! Knowing what’s in season can make your trip more enjoyable.

  • Talk to the farmers and staff! They won’t bite! Ask questions if you see something you’re not familiar with, or ask them when your favorite veggie is in season.

  • Don’t manhandle the produce! Ask the farmer or their staff to help you choose produce to your desired ripeness.

  • It’s a good idea to have small bills on you, although some people have started accepting credit cards.

It’s helpful to plan recipes in advance, but leave room for spontaneity. Have a question about a new find? Send me a message, or comment below and we’ll brainstorm together. Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated, especially when you’re using farm fresh ingredients. Let their natural flavors shine and keep it simple!

Happy cooking!

xo Liz
